Summer Camp at the Gallery

Last week, we hosted Summer Camp at the Gallery for children aged 7 to 10!

These young artists had the opportunity to explore four exhibitions through activities and tours: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, HORIZONS, OF & ABOUT POSTERS and Black and White and Everything In Between: A Monochrome Journey.

Taking inspiration from the works and ideas on display, they then experimented in studio with a variety of mediums and processes to create their own works of art.

Campers began their week by creating personalized sketchbooks and name tags, followed by a tour of Black and White and Everything In Between: A Monochrome Journey with the Gallery’s Art Educators. The day concluded in the Annex, where they assembled and painted towering sculptures using found objects, inspired by the monochromatic works in the exhibition.

Campers also toured the 3rd Floor exhibition HORIZONS. They explored how artists interpret landscapes in painting and learned about conceptual art. In studio, the young artists created their own landscapes with watercolours, inspired by the artworks on display. They then learned how artists use horizon lines in art by lining up their own sketches side-by-side.

Later in the week, campers discovered how exhibitions are made and curated their very own miniature exhibitions using dioramas. They then toured OF & ABOUT POSTERS to further their explorations of conceptual art while learning about artist Lawrence Weiner’s text-based artworks. Afterwards, they designed poetic posters using stencils and text.

Summer Camp at the Gallery would not be complete without a visit to Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, where campers were introduced to the life and legacy of beloved BC artist Emily Carr. Surrounded by Carr’s works, the young artists sketched and created swirling, colourful pastel drawings inspired by Carr’s forest scenes.

In the final days of Summer Camp, campers even had the opportunity to experiment with multimedia art, creating stunning stop-motion animations.

At the end of the week, campers celebrated with a Summer Camp 2024 exhibition, where their works were displayed to be shared with family and friends.

Thank you to all of this year’s participants for their hard work and enthusiasm and to their parents for choosing to have their kids spend a week with us!

Special shout out to the Gallery’s Family Programs team, including the Art Educators and volunteers, for making this week such a success. It is a joy to welcome children to the Gallery and to discover the exhibitions through their eyes.
