YOUR GUIDE TO SLOW LOOKING AT THE GALLERY:
1. Select an artwork.
Slow looking is the art of learning through observation. It’s an invitation to engage all of your senses to experience and connect with art and yourself in new ways.
Choose an artwork that captures your attention—whether it fascinates, draws you in or even challenges you. Any work of art can reward a longer look.
2. Settle into a spot where you can take in the artwork comfortably.
Benches are available throughout the Gallery, and courtesy chairs can be borrowed on each floor for a longer, more relaxed look.
Grab a chair and give yourself the time to truly linger with a work that speaks to you.

3. Spend 5 to 10 minutes with your chosen artwork.
Don’t worry if nothing comes to mind at first. Stand still or move around to explore the work from different perspectives.
Keep your mind open, and let your eyes wander.
4. Be curious.
Notice where your attention goes.
- What are your first impressions?
- What draws you in?
- What details do you notice in the work?
- What thoughts or questions enter your mind as you look?
Focus on elements—such as colours, shapes, lines, textures or figures—one at a time.
