Member Profile: Becki Chan

Becki Chan, Gallery Member

Meet Becki Chan, a long-time Gallery Member.

Becki has been a Gallery Member since 2006, when she first moved to Vancouver. She has since started various businesses and a family of her own. Today, she is the Organizer of PechaKucha Vancouver and the Director of the new Design Vancouver Festival, which runs from September 19 to 29, 2024.

We asked Becki to tell us more about what her Gallery Membership means to her.

How long have you been a Gallery Member?

I’ve been a Gallery Member for 18 years, since 2006. You can tell I’ve been a member for a while from the pile of stickers on my membership card!

Why do you continue to visit the Vancouver Art Gallery?

I love art! I find the temporary exhibitions very interesting, ranging from modern to contemporary art, as well as fashion and technology. A major city needs to have an institution that brings programming like this to the public.

Why did you decide to become a Gallery Member?

I was a student, and we enjoyed coming to the member opening nights. I was new to the city, and it was exciting to go someplace where I could meet new people with similar interests.

What’s your favourite thing about being a Gallery Member?

I live nearby, and I enjoy being able to just drop by whenever the mood strikes me.

Can you tell us a bit about what you do?

My background is in design and architecture, but I am also the Vancouver Organizer of PechaKucha Night. This fall, I’m also excited to be part of the launch of the new Design Vancouver Festival, which will run from September 19 to 29.

What has been one of your most memorable experiences at the Gallery? Do you have a favourite exhibition that you’ve seen here?

Lee Bul in 2015. I visited the Gallery without knowing that Lee Bul’s exhibition was on. I went in the morning, and there didn’t seem to be anyone else in the entire gallery. I was able to experience the installations by myself, and they were awesome. I will never forget it.

What do you want to see more of in Vancouver?

More dedicated public spaces for activations, place-making, community events and performances.

Anything else you would like to add?

Now that I have a kid, I am looking forward to bringing her to the Gallery to experience the children’s programming and the exhibitions.
