Visions of British Columbia:
A Landscape Manual

2008

Published in the context of the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver, Visions of British Columbia celebrates the art and literature of the region by placing pieces from the Gallery’s permanent collection in conversation with texts about the province, written by both local and international authors. This juxtaposition of perspectives gives a glimpse into the artistic community in British Columbia.

Dana Claxton:
Fringing the Cube

This catalogue accompanied the first survey exhibition of Lakota artist Dana Claxton. A prominent figure in the reclamation of Indigenous culture in Canada, Claxton has a multidisciplinary approach to her artistic practice that is well showcased here. Dana Claxton: Fringing the Cube details her efforts to uplift her Lakota roots and give back to her community through art.

Jan Wade’s art is testament to the ingenuity of Black diasporic communities. Parviz Tanavoli:
Poets, Locks, Cages
2023

The Vancouver–based Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli is widely recognized as the only artist to fully capture the interplay of the Iran’s pre-Islamic and Islamic identities. Tanavoli draws on traditional motifs and iconography from the country’s history to create a new visual symbology through his groundbreaking sculptures. Produced to accompany the 2023 exhibition of the same name at the Vancouver Art Gallery—the first major Canadian exhibition of the artist’s work—this catalogue examines the breadth of Tanavoli’s interdisciplinary practice, from painting and printmaking to ceramics and mixed-media assemblages.

Offsite:
The Anthology
2024
Published to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Offsite—the Vancouver Art Gallery’s outdoor, public art space—Offsite: The Anthology brings together commentary on twenty-six projects as well as extensive photographic documentation. From the beginning, Offsite’s mandate recognized the value in site-specific, temporary public art projects that consider not only location but the social and cultural implications of the site itself. This anthology marks the first significant publication on these engaging, site-specific installations.
