Happy Canada Book Day! To celebrate, we’re highlighting five compelling Gallery publications featuring BC–based artists—handpicked by our Publication Assistant, Natalia Camacho.

A Landscape Manual
2008
Published in the context of the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver, Visions of British Columbia celebrates the art and literature of the region by placing pieces from the Gallery’s permanent collection in conversation with texts about the province, written by both local and international authors. This juxtaposition of perspectives gives a glimpse into the artistic community in British Columbia.

Fringing the Cube

Soul Power
2022
Jan Wade’s art is testament to the ingenuity of Black diasporic communities. This beautiful softcover catalogue with exposed binding features stunning photographs of Wade’s intricate pieces, an interview with the artist, fragments of her life in her own words and more. Every detail of Jan Wade: Soul Power is a celebration of her career and vision.

Poets, Locks, Cages
2023
The Vancouver–based Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli is widely recognized as the only artist to fully capture the interplay of the Iran’s pre-Islamic and Islamic identities. Tanavoli draws on traditional motifs and iconography from the country’s history to create a new visual symbology through his groundbreaking sculptures. Produced to accompany the 2023 exhibition of the same name at the Vancouver Art Gallery—the first major Canadian exhibition of the artist’s work—this catalogue examines the breadth of Tanavoli’s interdisciplinary practice, from painting and printmaking to ceramics and mixed-media assemblages.
