In the Gallery

Every Sunday, the Gallery offers unique activities geared toward 5- to 12-year-old visitors and their families. Throughout the month of October, we will continue to investigate the exhibitions Vikky Alexander: Extreme Beauty and Robert Rauschenberg 1965-1980.

All activities are free for children aged 12 & under, when accompanied by an adult. Adult participation is with admission or free for Gallery Members.

Join our team of curious, funny and informed Art Agents as they bring the Gallery’s exhibitions to life. They engage with the exhibitions through in-gallery activities, questions, and conversations relating to what your family notices about the artworks on display.

Then move on to The Making Place which offers art-making activities inspired by the materials and processes that you see in the exhibitions on display. Drop in any time between 12 and 4 PM to take part.

The Making Place Activity

October 13: Introspection and Visual Storytelling
Vikky Alexander and Robert Rauschenberg both have the ability to create a narrative within their artwork whether through a story they’re telling or opening up the dialogue to the audience. Rauschenberg’s Autobiography, 1968 is layered with images referencing elements of himself, including an x-ray of his skeleton. He captures the experimentation of his work at the time while giving the audience hints of who he was. Vikky Alexander has a different approach to the sense of self with the reflection of consumers as well as the literal reflection with the use of mirrors.

Families are invited to look closely at the stories and reflections of the artwork. We will be discussing the references the artists are using and what they mean to the audience as well as the use of our own reflection in the artwork. We will be layering prints, creating our own story within our artwork.
