August 18: Materiality and Realism

Alberto Giacometti redefines realism with reflection to the different artistic movements as well as the political shifts. He worked with many different artists that were influenced by the new idea of realism with reflection to the post-war era. This materiality allowed for an exploration of expression in a new sense and definition of realism. Two artists that worked during the same time as Giacometti were Jean-Paul Riopelle and Jean Fautrier. Their work was reflecting the raw existential emotions that are similarly felt through Giacometti’s work. We will be looking at the different materials that were used by the different artists throughout the exhibition. There are stylistic changes through the mediums that were used. Families are invited to work with molding materials to create texture paintings in reference to the artists’ use of paint as they reflect a more existential realism in their artwork.
