Explore the Art of Banig Weaving: A Filipino Tradition

Join us for this special edition of The Making Place in celebration of Asian Heritage Month at the Gallery and discover the beauty of banig—traditional, handwoven mats from the Philippines, primarily used for sleeping.

In this hands-on workshop, Art Educator Yvette Salazar will guide you through a simplified banig weaving technique. Using colourful strips of paper, you’ll create your own woven piece to take home.

Rooted in Filipino craft traditions, banig weaving is historically made from pandanus leaves and has evolved to be used to create not only mats but also bags, slippers and even boat sails.

This workshop offers a thoughtful introduction to banig’s cultural and artistic significance, reimagined with accessible materials for all ages.

Each workshop will run for 75 minutes. Three workshops will take place throughout the day between 11 AM and 4 PM.

Register to join a workshop when you arrive at The Making Place.

Join a Family Tour! Delve deeper into the exhibitions with a guided Family Tour. Every Sunday at 2 PM, the Gallery offers a tour designed for visitors aged 5 to 12 years old and their families. Sign up for a same-day tour on the day of your visit in The Making Place.
