Evelyn Roth in her Video Armour, 1972, outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery, during the exhibition Pacific Vibrations, 1973

Join us at the Gallery for a special afternoon with artist Evelyn Roth, whose work is now on view in the exhibition Kids Take Over!

Bringing together visitors of all ages, this event will celebrate Roth’s extensive body of work created over the past fifty years and introduce her practice to a new generation of art lovers.

The program will begin with Roth’s storytelling performance Vancouver Slide Dress. Assistant dancer Christine Elsey will be dressed in Roth’s wearable art and will use special flashlights to project images and colours onto the walls, while Roth tells stories about the slides as they appear. The images shown will take the audience back through time to discover Roth’s community engaged practice over the years, including her fabric ceilings and murals for the World Habitat Forum in Vancouver in 1976; her recycled video tape car cozy and entry canopy at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Spokane Expo in 1976; and 200 street banners, each made by children in Vancouver in 1979 for the International Year of the Child. This performance will be accompanied by live music performed by Ray Fuse and the In Fuse Band. Also, Sydney/Eora-based film collective Garden Reflexxx will present a new video-poem featuring Roth, co-produced by frequent collaborator Alison James.

Following Vancouver Slide Dress, Roth will lead the audience in a collaborative weaving project—ideal for children and families! Inspired by Roth’s work, participants will experiment with upcycled materials and the weaving processes that are central to Roth’s practice.

This program is designed for visitors of all ages.

FREE for children 18 and under. Free for members or with Gallery Admission.

Capacity for this event is limited. Registration is required.
