ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Feven Kidane (she/they) is an Ethiopian-Canadian composer, trumpeter, bassist and electronic musician living on the lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō, Səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. She adheres to the traditions of Black American Music (“jazz”), studying its foundational components of decolonization, creation, spirituality and self-liberation. As an improviser in Vancouver’s free scene, she has worked alongside veterans of the genre including Douglas R. Ewart (Yusef Lateef, Anthony Braxton), as well as being a member of the New Orchestra Workshop Society (est. 1977). She performed at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2021 as a sideman and in 2022 as both a sideman and a bandleader. She also makes electronic music inspired by both her Blackness and the video games of her youth under the moniker thehabeshaman.

Harmeet Kaur Virdee (she/her) is a double bassist, vocalist, flutist, bandleader, composer and music educator based in Surrey, BC. She is currently a student in Capilano University’s Jazz Studies program and a recent Performance Prep graduate from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music (VSO SoM). She has studied with established jazz musicians such as Jodi Proznick, Miles Black and Jennifer Scott. In addition to performing, Kaur Virdee is a very passionate teacher. She teaches a variety of ages at the VSO School of Music and The Stage Musical Theatre Academy, from preschoolers all the way to seniors. Kaur Virdee enjoys working with students of all ages as they explore the wonders of music.

Noah Franche-Nolan (he/him) is a pianist, composer, improviser and educator, who strives to explore the blending of various musical styles in his work, as well as the blending of artistic practices when engaging in multi-disciplinary projects. His music practice is grounded in the study of Black-American Music and Western European Classical Music. Franche-Nolan has toured across Canada and Europe with Harry Vetro’s Northern Ranger Project, appeared on many records as a side-pianist, released his debut record (Dreaming Hears the Still), and is the keyboard player for Shruti Ramani’s Raagaverse, which recently performed at the Roundhouse Theatre for the 2022 Vancouver Jazz Festival.

While Todd Stewart’s (he/him) drumming expertise spans a wide range of musical genres and styles, he is primarily known for working within Vancouver’s “Jazz” scene as a sideman for a wide range of artists, including multiple Juno award-winner, Brad Turner (Metalwood, Seamus Blake) and Chris Davis (Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Jon Batiste). On top of this, he is a composer and arranger, leading multiple creative projects. He recently performed in the 2022 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival as both a bandleader and a sideman.
