Victor Vasarely presents a selected survey of paintings, sculptures and prints produced in the 1960s and ‘70s by the Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) at the height of his popularity. Today, Vasarely is celebrated as the father of Op Art and is world renowned for his colourful abstract patterns and playful, visually engaging aesthetic.
The international Op Art movement was also actively embraced by a dynamic group of Vancouver artists in the 1960s, including Joan Balzar, Brian Fisher, Michael Morris, Bodo Pfeifer, Gordon Smith and Takao Tanabe. The exhibition Op Art In Vancouver spotlights a selection of their works from the Gallery’s collection.
Developed in response to Victor Vasarely, Uncommon Language invites visitors to reflect on various modes of language used in modern and contemporary art. Touching on questions of abstraction, spirituality, subjectivity and embodiment, this dynamic group exhibition features a rich selection of artworks by local, national and international artists from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s collection.
