Lecture: Magda Keaney

Join Magda Keaney, Senior Curator—Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, London, for a lecture on the work of American photographer and filmmaker Cindy Sherman, presented in conjunction with the artist’s first Canadian retrospective.

Keaney will offer an overview of the exhibition Cindy Sherman and speak to the photographic portrait in popular culture and fashion image making, as well as the intersection of the photograph, portraiture and contemporary art.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Magda Keaney is Senior Curator, Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, London. She leads the team of curators responsible for acquisitions, displays and exhibitions, as well as research and care of the Photographs collection. Keaney has worked as a photographs curator for over twenty years. She has written widely on photography for books, catalogues and magazines and produced numerous exhibitions from her early career as an Assistant Curator at the Australian National Portrait Gallery. Keaney was also the inaugural Creative Director of the Fashion Space Gallery at London College of Fashion. Before returning to London, she was Senior Curator of Photographs at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, where she was the lead curator for the Centenary of Armistice special exhibition, After the War. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Australian National University in Canberra, investigating the photographic studio and its formative role in the emergent field of fashion photography during the early twentieth century.
