Yuka Morino practices the art of Kintsugi, Courtesy of the Artist
Join renowned instructor Yuka Morino for a special workshop on Kintsugi, the traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and gold.
Through hands-on instruction, participants will learn each step of the intricate process, practicing on ceramic fragments and gaining insight into this centuries-old craft, one used by Japanese ceramic artist Otani Workshop for the first time in preparation for his exhibition Otani Workshop: Monsters in My Head.
In addition to Kintsugi, the workshop includes an introduction to urushi, or Japanese lacquer—an essential material and technique shared by both arts—through the finishing of lacquerware chopsticks.
Each participant will take home their restored pieces. No prior experience is required. Capacity is limited to 20.
The cost of this workshop is $148 for Gallery Members and $158 for the public. Fees include all materials.
The same workshop will also take place in the afternoon from 1 to 3 PM. Find out more »
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Yuka Morino grew up in Kyoto, Japan. Her grandmother played a big role in shaping her appreciation for ceramics by collecting pieces from various artists. When one of her grandmother’s prized collections broke, Morino discovered the art of Kintsugi and started mending broken pottery while studying at Kyoto University of the Arts.
Morino now lives on Quadra Island in BC and offers repair services for ceramics and pottery through her company Three Little Spruce. She is also a jeweler and applies ancient Japanese craftsmanship to her designs, using a combination of 金彩 Kindami (A gold application technique) and 金継ぎKintsugi (Mending broken ceramic). Morino’s philosophy for her life and work is “embrace your imperfections; celebrate your history.”
