Indigenous Beauty is a program series presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery to amplify and centre Indigenous voices, providing a platform for Indigenous peoples to define themselves. The next five programs in this series will focus on the elements of hip hop from the perspective of Indigenous artists.

Since the early 1990s, hip hop has been a driving force of activism within Indigenous youth communities and an important platform for self-expression. The roots of hip-hop culture and music have been transformed into forms that echo current realities of young people, creating dynamic forums for storytelling and Indigenous language, as well as new modes of political expression. This movement has been influential across disciplines—similar strategies appear in the visual arts where artists remix, mash-up and juxtapose the old with the new, the rural with the urban, traditional and contemporary as a means to rediscover and reinterpret Indigenous culture within the shifting terrains of the mainstream.

This program will focus on emceeing and producing. Host Shadae Rose Johnson, Community Relations Coordinator of Indigenous Programs, will be joined by Oglala Lakota, Omaha and Navajo hip-hop artist Nataanii Means, Grammy-winning Mi’kmaq and Cree producer David Strickland and Pawnee and Seminole hip-hop artist and producer Marcus “Quese IMC“ Frejo for an informal conversation about their careers and how they intertwine their cultures in their work.

This talk will be presented on Zoom and streamed live to the Gallery’s Facebook account here »
