The Vancouver Art Gallery is pleased to collaborate once again with Indian Summer Festival to present a special day of programming in conjunction the exhibition Moving Still: Performative Photography in India.

12 PM | Performance by Arash Khakpour of The Biting School

Arash Khakpour is a dance artist and choreographer, who is interested in dance as a language through which to explore the human condition.

1 PM | Curator’s Tour: Diana Freundl with Sirish Rao

Join Diana Freundl, Associate Curator of Asian Art, for a tour of Moving Still: Performative Photography in India, with Sirish Rao, Artistic Director, Indian Summer Festival.

2 PM | Sitar performance by Mohamed Assani and friends

Mohamed Assani is an award-winning sitar player and ambassador for his rich musical tradition. Throughout his extensive career, he has brought the sitar to new audiences through innovative collaborations that have stretched the boundaries of his instrument.

3 PM | Keynote Lecture: Sunil Gupta

Join artist Sunil Gupta for a keynote lecture critically addressing issues of race, migration and queer identity in India in relation to his photographic series Sun City (2011), now on view in Moving Still. Over the last thirty years, Gupta’s work has focused on agency and empowerment in India’s gay communities, where homosexuality, until September 2018, was a criminal act under colonial-era law, punishable with ten years of imprisonment.

Sunil Gupta is an artist, educator, curator and recent doctoral graduate of the University of Westminster’s School of Arts and Media. Since the 1970s,Gupta has explored the politics of homosexual experience through the lens of his own identity as an HIV-positive Indian man, living and working in both England and India.
