ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Allan Collier is a collector, researcher and curator specializing in Canadian craft and design from 1940 to 1980. Over the last 35 years, he has curated several exhibitions on modern craft and design in museums and galleries across the country, also lending furniture and ceramics to them. These exhibitions include: West Coast Modern Furniture 1945-60 (Vancouver Art Gallery); Achieving the Modern (Winnipeg Art Gallery); Modernism at Home (Charles H. Scott Gallery); The Modern Eye, Craft and Design in Canada 1940-1980 (Art Gallery of Greater Victoria); and Life With Clay: Pottery and Sculpture by Jan and Helga Grove (Art Gallery of Greater Victoria). In addition to catalogue essays for the above exhibitions, Collier has also written articles on related topics: “Early Summerland Pottery” (80th Report, Okanagan Historical Society, 2016); “Plywood and Modern Furniture Design in BC 1945-1960” in A Modern Life (Vancouver Art Gallery, 2004) and The Trend House Program (Bulletin, Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, June 1995). Collier has also been engaged in designing and making furniture since 1978. In 2020, he was the recipient of the Craft Council of BC’s Citizen of Craft Award, which honours an individual who has made a significant impact in their community for craft and the artists who create it.
