Join us for a talk with Emily Hermant, the inaugural artist in Vancouver Now!, a new exhibition series highlighting artists whose work is both timely and deeply connected to this city.

Since moving to Vancouver in 2016, Hermant has developed a distinctive practice centred on weaving with discarded electrical wires and data cables. Her meticulously crafted works transform the physical infrastructure of contemporary technologies into intricate, textile-like compositions, encouraging viewers to look closely and consider the material systems that support our increasingly digital lives.

Hermant will begin with a presentation about her artistic practice, current research and the ideas behind her work in Vancouver Now!, followed by a 30-minute conversation with Dr. Richard Hill, Smith Jarislowsky Senior Curator of Canadian Art and curator of the exhibition, before concluding with an audience Q&A.

Free for Circles of Giving and Experiences Members, $5 for Ideas Members and $10 for Access Pass Holders. This event is $10 in addition to the cost of Gallery admission for the general public.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emily Hermant (she/her) is a visual artist whose work explores the materiality of communication. She holds a BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montréal and an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Hermant has exhibited extensively throughout Canada and internationally in museums, galleries and artist-run centres. Her work has been featured in ArtSlant, Espace Sculpture and Time Out Chicago, among others. She has participated in residencies at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, BoxoPROJECTS, the Burrard Arts Foundation, Ox-Bow School of Art, ACRE, the Vermont Studio Center and the Nordic Artists’ Centre. Hermant is the recipient of numerous grants, including awards from the BC Arts Council, the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In 2026, she was longlisted for the Sobey Art Award (Pacific Region) and The Hnatyshyn Foundation Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts. She lives and works on the unceded and ancestral territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations in Vancouver, Canada. Hermant is Associate Professor of Sculpture + Expanded Practices at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and is represented by Monte Clark Gallery.
