On International Women’s Day, join artist Stephanie Comilang, winner of the 2019 Sobey Art Award, in conversation with Director of Education and Public Programs Melissa Karmen Lee to discuss the art and labour of care.

What are the politics of feminine caregiving? How can we imagine and take advantage of new practices developed in response to our pandemic situations that no longer tether domesticity to feminized forms of care? How do we create new sight lines of knowledge, recognition and alliance in which art takes an ethical dimension, reordering the pain and pleasure of being in the world, of memorializing, of taking care?

This program will feature excerpts from Comilang’s work Lumapit Sa Akin, Paraiso (Come to Me, Paradise) (2016), a science-fiction documentary made in collaboration with Filipina migrant workers Irish May Salinas, Lyra Ancheta Torbela and Romylyn Presto Sampaga. Comilang’s artistic practice explores the geopolitics of economic migration and citizenship labour and investigates questions around domesticity. The film also considers how technology is used as a pivotal method to care for and connect with each other and loved ones.
