ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Kinngait (formerly known as Cape Dorset), Nunavut, in 1961, Shuvinai Ashoona comes from a long line of artists, including her grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona (1904–1983) and cousin Annie Pootoogook (1969–2016). Ashoona produces her work at Kinngait Studios, part of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative. At the studio, Ashoona had access to art materials, which she took home to experiment with. She quickly became a regular there. Like the two generations of Inuit artists before her, she received no formal art training. Instead, she learned from her elders by watching them at work.

Ashoona creates drawings using pen and ink, pencil crayons and markers, inspired by her favourite movies, comic books and tv shows. Her detailed drawings are also filled with her memories of the Arctic, historical stories she has heard from her elders, and the daily realities of life in Kinngait. These everyday scenes are often combined with worlds and creatures from Ashoona’s imagination, creating her own unique take on life in the Arctic.
