Our Exhibits

The Vancouver Art Gallery presents exhibitions of work by artists ranging from historic masters to leading-edge contemporaries. These include major thematic exhibitions, presentations of solo artists and smaller, more focused showcases. In a typical year, 2 to 3 exhibitions are borrowed from other institutions and 10 to 12 exhibitions are developed in-house, drawing on our permanent collection and loans of works from around the world. In addition, the Gallery tours a few of its exhibitions each year.

Vancouver artist Elizabeth Zvonar conjures romantic sentiment and melancholic undertones in The Experience, a bleached-out collage that boldly positions itself in downtown Vancouver during the dreary winter months. A pair of sunglasses in the foreground of a celestial landscape from Mars reads like a postcard from the future. The eighteen-metre banner is framed by a reflective pool of water and colour. The Experience combines the materials and strategies employed in advertising to create tangential connections between social agency and advertorial entertainment. Zvonar's ambitious reproduction of a hand-cut collage is presented as part of MashUp: The Birth of Modern Culture, a major group exhibition tracing the history of mashup culture across diverse disciplines, presented at the Vancouver Art Gallery from February to June, 2016.

Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Diana Freundl, Assistant Curator.

Offsite is funded by the City of Vancouver through the Public Art Program. The Gallery recognizes Ian Gillespie, President, Westbank; Ben Yeung, President, Peterson Investment Group; and the residents of Shangri–La for their support of this space.

Offsite: Elizabeth Zvonar is the twelvth installation in the Gallery's Offsite series.
