Our Exhibits

The Vancouver Art Gallery presents exhibitions of work by artists ranging from historic masters to leading-edge contemporaries. These include major thematic exhibitions, presentations of solo artists and smaller, more focused showcases. In a typical year, 2 to 3 exhibitions are borrowed from other institutions and 10 to 12 exhibitions are developed in-house, drawing on our permanent collection and loans of works from around the world. In addition, the Gallery tours a few of its exhibitions each year.

When Rihanna walked the 2015 Met Gala red carpet sporting a 25-kilo dress spun from gold and fox fur, a fashion star was born: Chinese designer Guo Pei. Director Pďetra Brettkelly had full cooperation from the energetic designer, as well as behind-the-scenes access to the preparations for her make-or-break Paris runway show. The result is “an intimate, involving portrait… Brettkelly finds just the right sweet spot between pie-eyed flattery and sober appraisal of Guo and her methods.” – Hollywood Reporter

ARTISTS TALK
Guo Pei In Conversation with Bronwyn Cosgrave

In advance of the opening of the exhibition Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, join us for a conversation with artist and designer Guo Pei, facilitated by fashion journalist Bronwyn Cosgrave.

Rife with symbolism, Guo Pei's exquisite oeuvre of immaculately crafted masterpieces evoke the decadence of China's historical dynasties and have secured her a place amongst the world's premier fashion designers. Revered for combining China's rich aesthetic tradition with contemporary sensibilities, she is the only Chinese designer who has been invited to join Paris' prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

Presented in both English and Mandarin, the discussion will illuminate how Guo Pei uses the medium of fashion to revivify tradition through a contemporary lens.
