Our Exhibits

The Vancouver Art Gallery presents exhibitions of work by artists ranging from historic masters to leading-edge contemporaries. These include major thematic exhibitions, presentations of solo artists and smaller, more focused showcases. In a typical year, 2 to 3 exhibitions are borrowed from other institutions and 10 to 12 exhibitions are developed in-house, drawing on our permanent collection and loans of works from around the world. In addition, the Gallery tours a few of its exhibitions each year.

Selected from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s collection by artist Stephen Waddell, this exhibition takes the themes addressed in the work of the American photographer Harry Callahan as its starting point. Comprised of photographs, drawings, prints and paintings by artists such as Weegee, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Leon Golub, Lewis Hine, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Spero, Jack Shadbolt and Fred Herzog, An Agreeable State of Uncertainty presents a wide range of approaches to the city, the body and the relationship between public and private space.

Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and guest curated by Stephen Waddell, with assistance from Grant Arnold, Audain Curator of British Columbia Art.
