2008/2009 ACQUISITIONS

From July 2008 to June 2009, the Vancouver Art Gallery acquired 339 artworks through purchase and donation. Among the many highlights is a work by Jeff Wall titled River Road, generously donated by Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa. This is the twelfth work by Jeff Wall to be acquired by the Vancouver Art Gallery, making this the largest public collection of the artist’s work in the world.

The number of contemporary artworks in the Gallery’s collection continued to grow with additions of works by British Columbia artists. With the establishment of the Audain Emerging Artists Acquisition Fund, a work by Vancouver-based artist Mark Soo was purchased. A drawing by Luanne Martineau was among several works donated by Ann and Marshall Webb. The acquisition of a new photograph by Scott McFarland was supported with a generous donation by Phil Lind, which the artist supplemented with a gift of his own work.

In 2008, the Jean MacMillan Southam Major Art Purchase Fund was established and used to acquire a work by Jerry Pethick, as well as 23 photographs by Fred Herzog. Herzog also generously donated 42 additional photographs, making the Gallery’s holdings the largest institutional collection of his works.

The Gallery’s historical Canadian art collection expanded through the generosity of Dorothy-Jane and Harry Boyce, whose gift of 10 works included paintings by Emily Carr, F.H. Varley and Arthur Lismer. An anonymous donor gifted works by Manly Macdonald, Laura Muntz Lyall and Edward Shrapnel.

Many artists made generous donations of their own work, including Lorraine Gilbert’s gift of 33 photographs from her Vancouver-Montreal series, 25 photographs documenting Western Canada and its inhabitants from George Hunter, Gordon Smith’s gift of a recent landscape painting, Bill Jones’ photographic diptych, as well as gifts from Liz Magor, Patrick Traer and Renée van Halm, who each contributed major sculptures.

The collection continues to benefit from the outstanding generosity of collectors such as Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa, Claudia Beck and Andrew Gruft, Monty J. Cooper, Bill Jeffries, Dr. Rodrigo Restrepo, Sandra L. Simpson, Allan and Faigie Waisman, and Ann and Marshall Webb. The Vancouver Art Gallery sincerely thanks all donors for their generosity in providing for the growth of the collection.
