Several new works were purchased with the Vancouver Art Gallery Acquisition Fund and
matching funds from the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance Program, including
two photographs from Vikky Alexander’s Island series titled Collision and Overgrowth , four

drawings by Shelagh Keeley from her major series after Lucretius/De Rerum Natura/the nature
of things and a sculpture by collaborative duo Trevor Mahovsky and Rhonda Weppler called
Rozinante . Photography continues to be a significant aspect of the Gallery’s contemporary
collecting activity and these holdings were supplemented by the acquisition of four silver
gelatin prints by Vancouver-born, Shanghai-based artist Greg Girard that feature street scenes
in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

Other significant contemporary additions include Kevin Schmidt’s single-channel video
projection Long Beach Led Zep , gifted by Reid Shier and Zoe Lasham. From Monty Cooper, the
Gallery received a sculpture by Richard Artschwager and a painting by Marcel Dzama. A granite
sculpture by Jenny Holzer was received from Dr. Thomas Pullano and Mr. Brad Waites.
The Gallery is especially grateful to artists who enhance the Gallery’s representation of their

practice through donations of their own work, including Vikky Alexander, Patrick Faigenbaum,
artist collective MadeIn Company and Elizabeth Zvonar. Notably, Edward Burtynsky gifted
thirty-four photographs that were featured in his recent exhibition A Terrible Beauty and continue
to be presented across British Columbia as the exhibition tours provincially.
Promised Gifts to the Gallery’s permanent collection include those from Phil Lind, who has
generously pledged Mark Lewis’ single-channel video projection The Fight , as well as those

from artists Douglas Coupland, Shelagh Keeley, and Trevor Mahovsky and Rhonda Weppler,
who have all promised their own artworks in the years to come.
We are enormously grateful to all of our donors, whose continued generosity is critical to
the growth of the Gallery’s permanent collection—thank you!
