ON STAGE
Recent Acquisitions

June 28 to October 19, 2014
Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Ian M. Thom, Senior Curator-Historical

Artists often depict individuals in artificial situations, as if their subjects are on a stage. In the works presented
in On Stage , each of the artists has—in their own way—created a setting or context for their subject(s), whether
real or imaginary. The exhibition was comprised of self-portraiture, social observation and works that create
their own sense of theatricality. All of these artworks posit that we should look closely at the signs of staging
within our own context or that of others. The works on view offered occasionally poignant comparisons between
historical and contemporary pieces, and used a range of approaches to examine our daily performances.
This exhibition was the Vancouver Art Gallery’s first presentation of a group of works that entered the institution’s
permanent collection over the last four years. While the Gallery purchased some of these pieces, the majority
were gifts from generous and publicly spirited donors. We acknowledge with thanks the support of all donors.
