VANCOUVER CITY PAVILION

Brian Jungen at the 9th Shanghai Biennale

October 2 to December 31, 2012
Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery
Curated by Daina Augaitis, Chief Curator/Associate Director

Brian Jungen exemplifies ideas of “reactivation,” the theme of the 9th Shanghai Biennale, through his repurposing
of everyday, mass-produced objects into unexpected sculptural forms that are at once familiar yet strange.
For this installation, Jungen thrilled Chinese audiences with several examples of the transformed Nike
Prototypes for New Understanding as well as Cetology, a grand work from the Gallery’s permanent collection
the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance Program and the Vancouver Art Gallery Acquisition Fund, Photo: Patrick Wack.

comprised of cut-up plastic patio chairs crafted into an enormous, suspended whale-like skeleton. In his witty,
conceptual inversions, Jungen transforms commodities into new hybrid forms that reactivate the source materials.
Just as he learned from his family to repurpose materials in order to prolong their use, his work invites viewers
to re-imagine the possibilities of extending the life of abundant consumer products.
