Over the past three decades, Marian Penner Bancroft has produced a powerfully evocative body of work that
engages with the intersection of everyday life, social history and individual memory. This exhibition traced

representation shape our understanding of the world and our place in it.
Drawing upon feminist challenges to the photograph as a truthful depiction of reality, Penner Bancroft
considers photography as a form of language that, like any descriptive system, is malleable and incomplete.
She often combines photographs with text or sculptural elements to emphasize both the linguistic nature of
photography and the character of the photograph as a physical object.
